For Tibetan, Guru Padmasambhava is like the second Buddha and he is the founder of Tibetan Buddhism. There are many Guru Padmasambhava prophecies like Lord Buddha. Like Lord Buddha, himself foretold that when his teachings declined over time.
In this articles, we will learn some of most famous Guru Padamasambhava prohecy and his quotes. For Tibetan buddhism he is founder and people always called him as Guru ripoche means Precious Guru.
Guru Padmasambhava prophecy
Prophecies made more than 1,250 years ago by Guru Padmasambhava also known as Guru Rinpoche. When one of his disciples asked him when is the beginning of the Dharma-ending age. To this he visualized and then replied;
“When the Iron Birds are flying in the sky and the Iron Horses are running on the roads, we know that dharma-ending age has arrived. At this time, Tibetan Buddhism shall flourish globally. When the iron bird flies and the horses run on wheels, the Tibetan people will be scattered like ants across the world, and the Dharma will come to the land of the red men (Western Countries).
In this Dharma-ending age, “Rulers do not act like Rulers, Subjects do not act like Subjects, Fathers do not act like Fathers, Sons do not act like Sons”. The relationships between Fathers and Sons are more like Playmates. Women do not honor and uphold chastity; men indulge in lust and unrestrained sexual misconduct.
Guru Rinpoche further prophesied that in that era, carriages do not require horses to move, they self-propel. Youngsters in that era step on something that is shaped like a bullhorn and there are wheels underneath that allow them to skate everywhere. It is even stranger that people in that era do not need to leave their houses to know things that happen around the world, just by sitting in front of a mirror.
Guru Rinpoche further said that in that era, many ordained monks are greedy and pursue wealth and fame. They travel everywhere to cheat on their followers. They plan and think of ways to get offerings and donations from followers and possess their own private wealth and properties, yet they do not engage in any Buddhist practices or chanting on their own. They indulge in music, dance, and entertainment. They break precepts and vows without any remorse.
Guru Rinpoche commented that in that era, husband and wife relationships shall be ruined and damaged by so-called “double-tongued” women, who instigate, provoke, and create disharmony within families. Unfilial sons and daughters will chase their parents out from home. Brothers and sisters shall fight among themselves for an inheritance, and violate the five precepts without remorse.
Buddha’s teaching gradually faded and eventually lost. There shall be incest among the closest kin. Many people shall be addicted to gambling, drugs, and alcohol. Buddhas’ statues and paintings, Buddhist ritual instruments are sold in flea markets on the streets.
Vintage valuables passed down from generation to generation shall be sold and auctioned in international markets. Deforestation and overexploitation of nature cause ecological imbalances thereby resulting in frequent natural disasters. Thieves and robberies shall infest the entire city and paupers and beggars are seen everywhere.
In the year of the metal dragon, demons entered the water. In the year of Metal Snake, demons entered the wind and thunder frost hail, wreaking havoc and creating disasters for many. In the year of Water Goat, there shall be widespread infectious diseases.
Alcoholics shall die of cerebrovascular diseases; gamblers shall die of stomach disorder; slander shall die of throat-related diseases; heavy smokers shall die of lungs diseases; overconsumption of eggs, garlic, and onion causes frequent nightmares resulting in mental disturbances and eventually related death; hunters and slaughter of animals shall die of liver and intestines related diseases, sinners and those with heavy bad karma shall die of many types of diseases that are painful and sufferings.
The year of Wood Rooster is when the strength of Buddhism is the weakest. Evil spirits and demons shall take the opportunity at this time to wrench more havoc and creating more damages.
In the year of Earth Ox, there shall be wars among countries and many people shall perish. Commit good deeds, accumulate merits, transform your mind into Bodhichita for your own good and for the welfare of all the sentient beings, do never let yourself and others face natural calamities and karmic disaster. Render your help to the one who sacrifices their precious life to keep the flame of Buddha Dharma alive, who intends to do good for others, such goodness in person are hardly seen.
I received this from one of my cousins in Bhutan and I felt it should be made available for others to read and hopefully help to spread the wisdom. I would imagine this text would have been translated from the Tibetan language to English and therefore certain meaning may have been lost but the general gist of the content would still be accurate.
Om Ah Hum Vajra Guru Padma Siddhi Hum.
Guru rinpoche quotes
“Please guide all beings from this swamp of cyclic existence!”
“How very remorseful are you, who have accumulated evil! On this dangerous red passageway traversed by all, When you are brought to trial by the executors of Yama’s rites, even though you may have been once very powerful, here, it will be of no avail! Now is the time for the hearts and lungs of all great wrongdoers to be torn apart! Since you have practiced non-virtue, this reckoning of your past actions will be quicker and more powerful than lightning, so by fleeing you will not escape, and by showing remorse, this will be of no help! How pitiful are the human beings of Jambudvlpa who do not strive to practice the [sacred] teachings!”
“Are you oblivious to the sufferings of birth, old age, sickness and death? There is no guarantee that you will survive, even past this very day! The time has come [for you] to develop perseverance in [your] practice. For, at this singular opportunity, you could attain the everlasting bliss [of nirvāṇa]. So now is [certainly] not the time to sit idly, But, starting with [the reflection on] death, you should bring your practice to completion! The moments of our life are not expendable, And the [possible] circumstances of death are beyond imagination. If you do not achieve an undaunted confident security now, What point is there in your being alive, O living creature?
“In modern science the methods of analysis are principally applied to investigating the nature of material entities. Thus, the ultimate nature of matter is sought through a reductive process and the macroscopic world is reduced to the microscopic world of particles. Yet, when the nature of these particles is further examined, we find that ultimately their very existence as objects is called into question.”
“But, nevertheless, if there is even the slightest recognition, liberation is easy. Should you ask why this is so—it is because once the awesome, terrifying and fearful appearances arise, the awareness does not have the luxury of distraction. The awareness is one-pointedly concentrated.”
“Abandon your notions of the past, without attributing a temporal sequence! Cut off your mental associations regarding the future, without anticipation! Rest in a spacious modality, without clinging to [the thoughts of] the present. Do not meditate at all, since there is nothing upon which to meditate. Instead, revelation will come through undistracted mindfulness — Since there is nothing by which you can be distracted.”
“There is no reason for a sound faith to be irrational. A useful faith should not be blind, but should be well aware of its grounds. A sound faith should be able to use scientific investigation to strengthen itself. it should be open to the spirit not to lock itself up in the letter. A nourishing, useful, healthful faith should be no obstacle to developing a science of death.”
“O, [you], with your mind far away, thinking that death will not come, Entranced by the pointless activities of this life, If you were to return empty-handed now, would not your [life’s] purpose have been [utterly] confused? Recognize what it is that you truly need! It is a sacred teaching [for liberation]! So, should you not practice this divine [sacred] teaching, beginning from this very moment?”
“Seeing the mind as extraneous to oneself is indeed bewildering, yet bewilderment and non-bewilderment are of a single essence.”
“Be certain that the nature of mind is empty and without foundation. One’s own mind is insubstantial, like an empty sky. Look at your own mind to see whether it is like that or not. Divorced from views which constructedly determine [the nature of] emptiness, be certain that pristine cognition, naturally originating, is primordially radiant- just like the nucleus of the sun, which is itself naturally originating. Look at your own mind to see whether it is like that or not!”
